Fruit Van

The Food Co-op is a non-profit making organisation run by staff and volunteers which aims to make quality fruit and vegetables accessible and affordable. The yellow van with it's Toot for Froot message on the side comes to Temple on a Friday around about 10-10.30, stopping at various points through the village. Carrington, Borthwick and Middleton are also on its Friday run. Very reasonable prices and a good variety of fruit and veg.
For further details call the van on 0785 578 2714 or the office on 01875 823 922. This project is partly funded by NHS Lothian, Midlothian Council, EU and the Big Lottery Fund.

Transport

The public transport options in the Temple area are very limited, with the nearest buses only coming as close as Birkenside. To get you the last few miles home, you will need to rely on a taxi.

  • Lothian Buses run three services that stop at Birkenside, the 3 and 3A (to Wester Hailes) and 29 (to Silverknowes). Both routes go via Cameron Toll and Princes Street with the 3 and 3A going via Dalkeith. The journey to Central Edinburgh takes about 40 minutes for the 29 and an hour for the 3 and 3A.
  • First Bus has a service that stops at Birkenside, the X95 which run from Edinburgh to Carlisle every half hour and can take anything from about 40 minutes- 1 hour to Edinburgh. The timetable can be found view a link on the First Bus website.
  • Edinburgh Black Cabs to the Temple area are usually about £25-35.
Taxis are available to order in Gorebridge.
  • For several decades, there has been a campaign to reopen the Edinburgh Waverley rail line from Edinburgh to Galashiels. On 15th March 2005, The Scottish Executive finally agreed to provide funding for the re-establishment of passenger rail services between Edinburgh and Tweedbank in the Scottish Borders, with the first trains running in 2008. This includes a station in Gorebridge with a service to Edinburgh taking around 30 minutes. Further details can be found on the Waverley Railway Project website.
